Monitoring and Minimisation of Traffic-Induced Noise and Air Pollution Along Major Alpine Transport RoutesAlpine Freight Railway

Transport across the Alps - MONITRAF

Background

Early on the Alps have been an important transit area for trading goods between the north and the south. The main transit arteries are of strategic significance for the economic and social development throughout and outside the Alps. However, excess traffic negatively impacts man, the environment and the economy itself.
In 1985 the ARGE Alp (Working Committee of Alpine countries) postulated in their transport concept the shift of freight transport from road to rail. Today, in 2005, it is obvious that this objective has not yet been achieved.
This example shows that transport does not regulate itself without taxation or legal measures; in which the measures have to reach beyond the actual sector. Therefore, a sustainable solution for the Alpine Space is imperative.

The International Conference “Transport across the Alps –
MONITRAF”, which takes place from December 1 to 3, 2005 in Lucerne will address central questions regarding transport in the Alpine region:
  • What impact does road traffic through the Alps have along the transit arteries?
  • How do legal and political regulations influence transit traffic?
  • Which interactions can be observed between transport, spatial development, tourism, environment and economy?
Information concerning current trends and research results with regard to transport in the Alps will be provided in the context of lectures and discussions. Furthermore an excursion to the construction site Amsteg of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, one of the most comprehensive transport projects in the Alpine region, will illustrate a practical example.

The conference offers you a platform for international and interdisciplinary exchange of experience and ideas. We kindly invite you to participate in discussions with renowned international experts and governmental representatives about the current transport situation.
